The phenomenon of synesthesia, where one sensation evokes another, forms the basis of much of Kandinsky's abstract painting. When Kandinsky listened to music, he saw colors; when he looked at colors, he heard sounds. Through the colors in his abstract paintings, he aimed to create symphonies.
